The Course:
- Mostly flat with rolling hills - I really enjoyed the
contour of this course. In addition to the gentle hills, we ran under plenty
of shady oak trees that kept the sun from beating down on us.
- Weather - Warm (upper 60s to lower 70s) with slight
breeze; this was my ideal weather for a run of this distance.

Josh and I ran the Southend Half Marathon as part of our training
for Grandma's Marathon in 2002. Evan served two roles: race volunteer
and cheerleader. |
 |
Obviously, this is the finish line, where Evan was stationed as a
race volunteer (he even received a free race t-shirt). |
 |
Josh and I are seen here following the race with Josh's father, also
part of our cheering section. I was not feeling too well after this one. |
Josh and I went to Charlotte, NC for the Southend Half Marathon as part of
our Grandma's Marathon preparation (plus, to enjoy new scenery on a long run).
We met Lee Hall, who was also running his first half marathon, around the third
mile and finished the race with him (unfortunately, there are no pictures of the
three of us). Around the tenth mile I got a pretty intense right side cramp that
made breathing difficult, but with Josh's encouragement, I was able to ignore it
until the end of the race. All in all, it was an interesting, different way to
fulfill a long run.
To my knowledge, this race no longer exists. It's too bad, because it was a
nice, enjoyable course.
