Training Log: September 2005

Seriously...

Glacier at Mount Rainier, picture taken on a hike in August 2005 A vew of the Seattle summertime sunset from my living room window. Gorgeous! Alki Beach - West Seattle

I had this wonderful moment in May where I decided I was rededicating myself to running - and then, I flew back to SC to graduate from medical school. Then - I returned to Seattle and moved into a new condo (the pictures of the Seattle skyline above was taken from my living room window - que bonita!). I also traveled back to SC a second time for several weddings and to spend time with my mother before I was to begin my residency. We ran quite a bit together, actually, but I never posted my mileage to my website (although I do have records in an Excel spreadsheet). Then, with the start of residency, all thoughts of exercising ske-dad-led. I was lucky to get enough sleep, much less go running. For three straight months I was on call overnight at the hospital every fourth night (this means every fourth day I was starting a new 30-hour shift). This madness ended (fortunately) in mid-September, and while I like my new role as a physician, I have missed having the energy to run.

So here is an attempt to make a commitment to running. Dick and Sandy Michener, fellow runners I met through an online running community four years ago, contacted me about running the HarrisDirect Seattle Half-Marathon on November 27th. As they are from North Carolina and are traveling a significant distance for this race, I have eagerly enrolled myself and now have this new goal looming ahead of me.

So let's start again... :-)

Of note: I had some difficulty with side-cramps and chest pain during this   run, which I am partially attributing to the dry climate. Despite running indoors, I have frequently had trouble running in dryer climates, going back to my summer in Montana in 2000.

A view of Mount Saint Helens, from the airplane window. Impressive crater, no?

The Nevada desert, just west of Las Vegas
